Detours

I remember the song, “Detour, there’s a muddy road ahead, Detour…” Life is full of DETOURS. Maybe you made a detour in your education with a stint in the military. Maybe you saw the sign that said, “MINEFIELD” so you wisely detoured around it. Lots of reasons for DETOURS but they should never stop you from getting to where you want to go or ought to go or from completing your mission.

Jonah, the world’s first surviving submariner, was given a mission. “GO. Go and tell the people of that evil city of Nineveh that if they don’t change their evil ways God would destroy them.” That was like telling a Kosovan or member of the KLA to go to Belgrade and tell the Serbs that if they don’t change their ways God would destroy them. Jonah didn’t like the Ninevites and he didn’t like his orders so he went AWOL and made a major DETOUR and ended up with a whale of a problem.

Unfortunately Jonah, (like us sometimes), forgot that God never sends us out on a mission alone. He initiated the “buddy system”. He always goes with us. He promised “never to leave us or forsake us” and as Adam and Eve and later Jonah found out, “You can run but you can’t hide”.

So, what mission has God cut frag orders on for you in this life? What direction is he trying to point your life in?

Jonah ran not because he was afraid, but because he hated the Ninevites or Assyrians. They were a brutal military force, used effective psyops, and practiced population relocation to cut the knees off any resistance just as the Soviets did after WWII.

Maybe God is calling you to go on a mission to the Peoples Democratic Republic of Vietnam as he did with Col. Roger Donlon (MOH) or to Laos or Cambodia or some other place you’d rather not go to.

God pursued Jonah for his own good, put him up before “A Captian’s Mast” and finally into the brig to think about his DETOUR and then put him ashore in the original sub to shore operation to complete his mission. Jonah finally, reluctantly, but successfully carried out his mission.

Think how much more painless it would have been had he just followed orders the first time and embarked on the mission without DETOURS.

Have you been taking DETOURS from what God has called you to do with your life? Have you been living in the belly of the whale all these years? Are you ready yet to be put ashore?
