Chapter XXIII - 23
One Strike and You're Out

It’s pitch black; the normal night sounds are shattered by exploding motar rounds and small arms fire. Your grope around for your weapon and fire toward the silhouette in the doorway of your hooch. The last sound you hear is the bolt going forward but no shots being fired. You had neglected to clean your rifle after coming in from a local recon. It was a simple error but a fatal one. One strike and you were out.

If you’ve been following the news in Army Times you see another example of this concept. A 2 star general headed towards a 3rd. star is accused of inappropriate sexual behavior with a female 3 star and his reputation and future in the military are finished. Sounds like “one strike and he’s out!” 30 years of military service down the tubes.

Unfortunately the general is not the first or the last to make a single bad choice that changed the course of his life. King David, “a lifer”, decided to stay back in HQ’s instead of leading his troops into battle. He looked out from his balcony, saw the wife of one of his troops bathing, got the hots for her, committed adultery with her (one step at a time into the trap), had her husband killed, and married the widow. If you read the rest of the story you find that it not only cost him but his descendents as well.

We’ve all faced temptation s in life that could, if we succumbed have disastrous results. The Bible tells us (I Cor. 10:13) that God is faithful, and will not let you be tempted beyond your strength. “Trust in Him. Let Him be your strength and your model when faced with life changing temptations and let your life be remembered as a “grand slam” and not a “strike out”.
